AJ grew up in rural America, studying English Literature at university before moving to Denver to study theology. After this, he completed a PhD at the University of Bristol, England, under the supervision of Gordon Wenham. Since then, he has served in various pastoral, educational, and leadership roles in the US and Australia.

At QTC, AJ serves as Lecturer in Old Testament and Hebrew, as well as Postgraduate Studies Coordinator. He is also Associate Fellow for the Kirby Laing Centre for Public Theology, Cambridge, UK, and Honorary Research Fellow for the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry at the University of Queensland.

AJ’s research interests revolve around a most fundamental claim of Scripture: that it is living and active. As such, his professional service and publications reflect this, having served on the Scripture and Hermeneutics Seminar steering committee for over a decade and having published various works leveraging theological hermeneutics and interdisciplinary studies: e.g., Puzzling Portraits: Seeing the Old Testament’s Confusing Characters as Ethical Models; Invited to Know God: The Book of Deuteronomy; Memoir of Moses: The Literary Creation of Covenantal Memory in Deuteronomy; and A Theology of the Pentateuch (with Craig Bartholomew).

AJ is married to Andrea, and they have three children together: Elijah, Hadassah, and Isaiah. He is also, for better or worse, an avid supporter of Aston Villa, the Brisbane Lions, and the Green Bay Packers.
