Master of Arts (Theology)

The MA in Theology is aimed at people who are already in full-time Christian ministry, and who want to further develop their knowledge and skills while they continue in ministry.  Students need to have previously completed at least three years of full-time theological study previously, such as a BTh, MDiv, BD, BMin or equivalent.

The MA (Theology) is an accredited course of the Australian College of Theology, like the other degree-level awards offered at QTC.  As such, eligible students can access Fee-Help to pay for all or part of their fees for the MA.  Fee-Help application forms and information booklets are available through the QTC office.  Fees until the end of 2012 are $1150 per unit.

The course comprises eight subject units, and is normally taken part-time.  A Project (15,000 words) can be taken, normally at the end of the MA, that counts for two units out of the eight.  Students may take up to six years to complete the MA.  There are no core subjects for the MA (Theology), however at least 75% of the degree (6 units) must be taken in the fields of New Testament, Old Testament, Theology, Church History and Philosophy/Ethics.  The majority of the units offered at QTC relate to particular books of the OT and NT, often with a focus on preaching these as a series at church or elsewhere.  Approximately three units are offered each year at QTC.  Most units are taught as intensives, with some pre-reading required beforehand.  Depending on the subject, assessment will be by a combination of essays, sermon scripts, group-seminar papers, and/or book reviews, totalling 8,000 words per unit.

On average at least one unit per year will be taught by an experienced visiting scholar from overseas, and others by the full-time QTC Faculty.

Credit for MA units is fully portable across all of the member colleges of the ACT.  It may be possible to receive credit for one unit (8 credit points) studied at MA level at a non-ACT college.
