Graduate Diploma of Divinity: 1 Year

Keen to be better equipped to serve God in your church, workplace, home?   Then why not join us for ten months at QTC through the GradDipDiv?!  The Graduate Diploma of Divinity (GradDipDiv) is a one year full-time course (or part-time equivalent) open to people who have already completed a Bachelor's degree in any discipline other than theology.

Who?

The GradDipDiv is a good option for two kinds of people:

Firstly, it is aimed at Christians who would like to pursue some theological training to help them to better serve as volunteers or part-time paid workers in their local church, or in other ministries.  It is also intended that the GradDipDiv would help Christians to be better taught and trained witnesses and workers for Christ in their existing areas of work and other responsibilities in the world.

Secondly, the GradDipDiv would be suitable for those who believe that they ought to undertake theological training but who are as yet unsure as to whether it is appropriate and possible for them to complete a three or four year theological degree.  Students who are commencing the GradDipDiv and considering the possibility of continuing beyond their first year into the 3-year MDiv (or four year MDiv/GradDipDiv) should ensure that they include Introduction to New Testament Greek (8 credit points) as an elective in their course.

What? – The Details:

The GradDipDiv is accredited by the Queensland Office of Higher Education & its interstate counterparts as an award of the Australian College of Theology (ACT), of which QTC is a member college along with around 20 other colleges nationally.  As such, it is a recognized course for the purposes of Austudy, Youth Allowance, FEE-HELP and for overseas students.  For those undertaking the GradDipDiv at QTC, the recommended course structure involves completing a minimum of 32 credit points as follows:

  • Two subjects which survey the New Testament: NT501 & NT502 (8 cps)
  • Two subjects which survey the Old Testament: OT501 & OT502 (8 cps)
  • One subject designed to introduce students to the history and main theological developments of the critical early church period (pre-451AD): CH505 (4 cps)
  • One subject, The Cross & the Clash of Cultures (CRN51), which considers the social and cultural context of the New Testament, with a view to seeing how the message of the Cross relates to and challenges the prevailing assumptions of Jesus' world - and our own (4 cps)
  • A minimum of two further elective subjects (8 cps) chosen from the list of subjects for the MDiv.  Prospective students should discuss their choice of electives with a member of the faculty prior to enrolment.  Those undertaking the course full-time in one year may enrol in a maximum of four electives (16 cps), which would involve studying five subjects per Semester, and ten for the year.

Any student who might like to transfer to the MDiv after the one-year GradDipDiv must complete the above, and also include LA004A & LA004B (New Testament Greek A & B – 4 cps each) in their course.  They should also consider taking LA003A&B (Biblical Hebrew A & B – 4 cps each).  Note that the minimum requirement for completing the ACT GradDipDiv is 32 cps (8 subjects), including at least one Theology or Church History subject, plus at least two out of: OT501, OT502, NT501, and NT502.

Electives currently offered at QTC include: Mission Perspectives, Introduction to Christian Ethics, Introduction to Children’s Ministry, Youth in the Churches, Foundations of Christian Education, Philosophy & Religion, Australian Church History, Christian Worship, Evangelism, Foundations of Pastoral Care, Pastoral Skills and Methods, Introductory Preaching, The Reformation in Europe and Britain, History of Evangelical Christianity, Australian Church History, The Knowledge of God, The Doctrine of God & the Work of Christ, The Doctrines of Grace & Eschatology, Church, Sacraments & Ministry, and Christian Worship.  Please note that most of the above subjects are offered every second year.

Students also benefit from our program of visiting speakers: biblical scholars and pastors from overseas who teach short intensives at QTC.  Recent visiting speakers have included Mark Driscoll, Don Carson, Alister McGrath, Kent Hughes, Fritz Schaefer, Richard Bauckham, David W Baker, Mark Dever, Christopher Wright, and Carl Trueman.
