Associate Degree of Theology: 2 Yrs
Associate Degree of Theology (2yrs full time)
The Associate Degree in Theology (AssocDegTh) is a two-year full time course (or part-time equivalent). It is not a suitable qualification for the majority of full-time paid ministry roles. However, it would be a good option for people in some associate or part-time part-time roles as members of ministry teams, or Christians who wish to be better equipped to serve in their current church, work, and /or home context.
The AssocDegTh is also available as an exit point after two years / 64 credit points of study in the three year courses of BTh and BMin, provided that the appropriate subject requirements have been met.
It is open to those who have a Universities Admission Index (UAI) of at least 75.00, or who are over 21 years of age and the faculty believes have the ability to complete a course at undergraduate degree level. The AssocDegTh is accredited with the relevant government authorities through the Australian College of Theology. As such, it is an approved course for the purposes of FEE-HELP, Austudy & Youth Allowance.
At QTC, its structure involves the completion of 64 credit points as follows:
- Four subjects (16 cps) which survey the Old and New Testament documents respectively: OT301 & 302, NT301 & 302.
- At least 8 further credit points in either Old or New Testament exegesis subjects, or introductory Hebrew (LA003) or introductory Greek (LA004).
- At least two subjects from TH401-404 - subjects which cover the major doctrines of the Christian faith (8 cps).
- CH305, Early Church History (4 cps).
- At least one further Church History subject from among those offered by QTC (4 cps).
- CRN31, The Cross and the Clash of Cultures, a subject which examines the social and cultural context of the New Testament, to help us in understanding how the gospel related to and challenged the alternatives of Jesus' time - and our own.
- All students must also complete a major in either (1) biblical studies, (2) Christian thought, or (3) ministry & practice. In order to complete a major in either biblical studies or Christian thought, students need to complete one extra subject in addition to the above requirements in the appropriate area - either NT, OT or biblical languages for biblical studies, or Church History, Theology, Ethics or Apologetics/Philosophy for Christian Thought. Students wishing to major in Ministry & Practice need to complete four further subjects in Evangelism & Mission, Pastoral or Developmental ministries. With special permission, those taking a Ministry & Practice major may be exempted from one of the TH or CH subjects listed above (but not CH305).
- All students must take one project (4 cps) in a subject area that forms part of their chosen major.
- Any remaining credit points within the total of 64 can be used to study electives from any field, drawn from the list of subjects offered for the BTh at QTC.
Your course of study is governed by the above structure as well as the Australian College of Theology's course regulations for the AssocDegTh.
